What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is the name given to blood plasma with a high concentration of platelets that contain huge doses of bioactive proteins, such as growth factors, that are critical in the repair and regeneration of tissues. The use of Platelet Rich Plasma along with other therapies we offer helps to heal the body and eliminate the need for surgery.

PRP is part of a relatively new field of medicine known as orthobiologics which includes the use of extracellular vesicles of stem cells and emphasizes employing the latest technologies along with the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

At MP Health PC we use PRP in conjunction with other therapies to aid in the pain relief and regeneration process of tendons, ligaments, and the regrowth of degenerating joint spaces including but not limited to:

• Meniscus Tears
• Rotator Cuff Tears
• Plantar Fasciitis
• Lower Extremity Joints: Hips, Knees, Ankles, Toes
• Upper Extremity Joints: Wrists, Elbows, Shoulders, Fingers
• Spinal Decay: Neck, Middle Back, Low Back

How it works:

In order to extract platelets, donated blood from healthy individuals undergoes centrifugation, a process in which mixtures are separated using centripetal force. This process separates out red blood cells, which carry oxygen, and the platelets and plasma. The platelets and plasma contain the needed healing agents.

The platelet rich plasma is then frozen for preservation and shipped to our facility which we then thaw and inject into the patient’s problem area.

We choose this method of platelet rich plasma to guarantee our patients get the highest quality product which has been thoroughly tested and optimized for maximum healing benefit.

After the injections:

After the injection, your immune system (the system that heals and repairs the body and keeps it healthy) reacts quickly. Special white blood cells called macrophages rush in. They take away damaged cells and help prep the site for healing. Then, stem cells and other cells begin to multiply. Over time, they repair and rebuild the injured site.

Depending on the type of injury you are experiencing and the severity of that injury, the doctors and nurse practitioner along with our team will come up with a customized treatment plan specific to you.

The PRP process is quick and you can go home the same day. We will make sure you have the tools you need to heal quickly and get back to doing the things you love.
